Holodomor or Golodomor?
The etymology of holodomor is from the Ukranian word "holod" and "mor" which when literally translated are ‘hunger’ and ‘plague’. This possibly stemmed from the expression moryty holodom or in the english language ‘to inflict death by hunger’. The perfect form of the verb "moryty" is "zamoryty" which means " to kill or drive to death by hunger, exhausting work".
One may find as they google up the word "holodomor" is a reference to a famine in Ukraine during the year 1932-1933. Millions of people starved to death because of Soviet policies at those times. It is considered as one of the greatest national catastrophes to affect the Ukrainian nation in modern history where estimates on the total number of victims range mostly from 2.2 to 10 million inhabitants of Ukraine died of starvation in an unprecedented peacetime catastrophe.
holodomor had been a subject of scholarly debate and the famine remains a politically-charged topic where some scholars have argued that the Soviet policies that have caused it may have been designed as an attempt to silence the peasants against the attack on the rise of Ukrainian nationalism.
And just last March 2008, holodomor was recognized as an act of genocide by the Soviet government. This has been concluded by the parliament of Ukraine and many governments of other countries. The recognition was a long-time overdue outcome of the joint declaration at the United Nations in 2003 which has defined the famine as the result of cruel actions and policies of the totalitarian regime that caused the deaths of millions of Ukrainians, Russians, Kazakhs and other nationalities in the USSR.
And on 23 October 2008, a new development has come to documentation which was through an adoption of a resolution by the European Parliament which states that holodomor was a crime against humanity.
