Yummy like Umami

Sometime in 1908 a certain professor named Ikukanae Ikeda from TOkyo Imperial University in Japan discovered that there is more to sweet, sour, bitter and salty. Yes, something that is not taught in our school - the 5th basic taste which is coined as Umami. Umami is the taste found in glutamate which can be found in cheese, tomato and meat. That is why spaghetti dishes which contains parmesan, tomatoes and meat is an irresistble dish.

The discovery of glutamate was initially found from the seaweed used in Japanese soup stock. It is funny though that we were taught not to put or use Mono Sodium Glutamate or MSG in our dishes as they claim to have certain risks in our health. In fact, glutamate lessens sodium intake because it only contains 1/3 sodium content of table salt.

Today, they are celebrating 100 years of the 5th basic taste which is Umami.

The best things...

My friend and I were talking about almost anything and everything under the sun...One of my confidants whom I assume is reading this one right now. We can chat for hours and talk about nonsense things to being dead serious. I've always treasured those moments because it is something that can never be replaced by something. I wish I have with me a tape recorder where I can record everything that we have talked about. Then when the day comes and we hit our separate roads and never cross our paths again, then I can play back and hear the voice and laughter that we've spent with each other.

I guess I am mostly the inquisitive one between the two of us. Just recently, I've asked the question "What to you is the best thing that happened in your life?" I guess in an effort to respond to my impromptu question, I got an answer : CAPE...Though I know it would be the answer, it sounded good 2 my ears. The question came back to me and I instataneously replied "My Charmed ones".

If again I would be asked the same question, know that the one who constantly reads my posts is one of the best thing that ever happened to me.

iLasik for the window of your soul

Just recently we had our Annual Physical Examination (APE) as part of our Environment Safe and Health Program in our workplace. Our health card is provided for by our Company so we don’t have to pay a single centavo when we have consultations or undergo an APE. Another good thing about our medical benefit is that it also covers our dependents including our parents.

Every year we take advantage of the APE to more or less gauge how physically fit we are. Part of the APE is to undertake a Visual Acuity (VA) test. A test conducted to see how our vision is doing. So far I have had a 20/20 vision for the past few years that I have been taking it. The results of the VA test are different however for my parents. With their age, their vision gets a little impaired which means that they would have to wear reading glasses or correction glasses. It would have been better if they would go through a laser procedure to correct those vision problems. Now I know that there are many laser procedures in the country that will give the best of care for my parent’s eyes and yet affordable. Then I found out about the LASIK technology and iLasik procedure.

This famous LASIK technology has been used by doctors for about a decade already. To date around 32 millions have already been performed using LASIK technology which includes the personnel of the Department of Defense and NASA. This alone is a fact that will prove that the technology and procedure is safe.

Most people are candidates and you just have to go to an iLasik surgeon for a consultation. There is no need to fear. As mentioned above, the iLASIK procedure only takes minutes. The refractive imperfections in your eye which is essentially the reason for your nearsightedness, farsightedness, and the likes will be corrected by reshaping your cornea. The wonder of this procedure is that it is affordable.

As the famous clichĂ© goes “Your eyes are the windows of your soul”. Thank God that he created the eyes as part of our face to appreciate the beauty of the world and everything that surrounds us. Give only the best for your eyes because it is one of those God-given gifts that truly creates wonders for us. So for those of you who are interested in having the iLasik procedure, more LASIK information can be found at www.ilasik.com.

To sleep or not to sleep?

Having a baby changes everything. I know that already that is why I think I got insomniac. I am not blaming it on motherhood but I guess it is one side effect to me. I thought it would be better not to sleep at all to get through the mad hours of my baby's sleeping pattern. It is not that it became a hobby of mine not to sleep but it would be more of an advantage to me if I stay awake through those untimely hours. While the people at our house are probably heading off to wonderland, here I am writing a blog.

Anyway, it's ironic that I have to write this down because I am charged guilty of practicing a bad habit. It's not that I have no choice but I'd probably lessen the pressure on us. I guess I would just like to share why people should not be like me. I read an article that says top ten things of why you should sleep:

- According to a 2006 Institute of Medicine report, people who get fewer sleeping hours may lead to obesity. By having fewer zzzz’s the “Leptin”, which suppresses appetite, is lowered; “Ghrelin”, which stimulates appetite, gets a boost.

- Another study which was published in the Archives of Internal Medicine in 2005 found out that fewer hours of sleep each night were 2.5 times more likely to be diabetic, while those with six hours or fewer were 1.7 times more likely.
In 2003 study found that women who slept for fewer hours per night are more likely to have heart attacks.

- Blood pressure may increase which is contrary to many beliefs that blood pressure drops.

- Depression. Research reveals that it is one side effect of getting not enough sleep.

With all of this, I rest my case.

Spiderman will hit the big screen again

The successful superhero Spiderman will cast his web and will save lives again soon. After such a long break, Tobey Maguire has finally put an end to months of gossip and has signed a contract for a fourth and fifth installment of "Spider-Man.".
Though Raimi admittedly said that there is no script yet production would start probably by March 2010. It may be too long for the sequel’s hit on the big screen but they would have to start first with a pen and a paper. There are a lot of issues that they would have to iron and a lot of pre-production that needs to be done.
For one thing, rumors have it that Kirsten Dunst’s (who played Mary Jane Watson for the past series) signing into the sequel has not yet been confirmed. She has been a big part of the movie and there is no telling if people would accept it if they are going to change the original Mary Jane Watson.
Another issue that they will be discussing is if the sequels will be shot back-to-back. Yes there is still no script for Spiderman 4 and 5 but Raimi already had it that the two movies would be connected. They have signed on “Zodiac” scriptwriter James Vanderbilt to write the script for Spiderman 4 and 5.
While the line-up is still on the trail, speculations have it that Dr. Curt Connors which was played by Dylan Baker will turn into “The Lizard” as it did in the comic series. It has also been rumored around that the astronaut John Jameson (ex-fiancĂ©e of Mary Jane) will undergo a transformation into Man-Wolf.
Surely a lot of Spiderman fans have been waiting for this. Only they have to wait a little more. Suspense is building up as web of speculations and rumors grow and grow for the sequel of Spiderman 4 and 5.

So I named her "Paige"

Each and every child is unique from the time they were conceived to the time they were born. I thought that the third one would be as simple as spelling out the abc's but it's like i am starting all over again. I guess its getting harder and harder every time. Though the fulfillment and joy of motherhood and of having such cute and adorable kids are priceless. I can say that they are the best thing that ever happened to me. I wouldn't trade them for anything in the world.

I know it would again take me those sleepless nights and would deprive me of so many things but I know that God have given me such wonderful blessings. I may have started off at the wrong foot and I hope I'll be able to straighten the crooked path I took. Things do happen for a reason and I've always lived by that credo and there's just no other explanation to the things that happen to us. Reasons that might not be so seemingly obvious to me right now but I know that there will come a time that it will just surface in front of me.

"Carpe diem" as Horace said for I know not what the future has in store for me but this I know....I must be grateful for today and for the yesterdays that have been given to me. I will enjoy every second that I am with them because they grow up so fast that I might not be able to give all the best for them. We will have our own tete-a-tete time and will cherish each moment for the rest of our lives. Some things that money can't buy.

Today another part of me has been born out of this world...another chapter of my life has been opened....and so another page of my story will be written...and to this, I named her "Paige".
